The UPAA Board of Directors, headed by UPAA President and Alumni Regent Atty. Ramon M. Maronilla launched its latest infrastructure project, the installation of an elevator at Ang Bahay ng Alumni, with simple ceremonies at the building in UP Dilliman, Quezon City, last November 24, 2015.
Guests of honor were GMA Chairman and CEO Atty. Felipe L. Gozon, LLB’62, and UPAA Lifetime Member Dr. Amelia Mangay-Maglacas, BSN’50, major donors to the elevator project, both of whom gave brief inspirational talks.
The elevator project had a jackrabbit start during the UP Alumni Homecoming in June 2012 with a PhP 1.1 million donation from the Golden Jubilarians led by Atty. Gozon. However, the amount was sufficient only for the purchase of an elevator unit; additional funds were needed for the civil and electrical works involved in constructing the shaft or hoistway from the ground floor to the third floor.
The elevator fund was greatly augmented on April 24, 2015, when Dr. Mangay-Maglacas magnanimously made a whopping PhP 1 million contribution, bringing the elevator fund total to over PhP 2 million.
Now estimated to cost a total of some PhP 4 million upon completion, the scenic elevator (with a capacity of 4-6 persons) is expected to be operational for the convenience of elderly UP alumni before the 2016 UP General Homecoming and Reunion on June 25, 2016.
The balance to complete the amount needed for the Ang Bahay elevator will come from various UPAA sources. May we expect your contribution sometime soon?
