The UP Alumni Association (UPAA) will launch a Carillon Concert Series at the Carillon Park in UP Diliman, Quezon City, this December 2015.
The first concert, entitled “Krismazz Jazz at the Carillon”, will be held on December 10, 2015, Thursday, at 6:00 p.m., featuring The UP Jazz Band, with conductor Prof. Raymundo Maigue.
Admission is free, with part of the proceeds from sponsorships to go to the maintenance of the Carillon Park and Tower.
The UP Carillon, built with funds donated by UP alumni, was inaugurated on August 1, 1952. It brought joy to generations of mga iskolar ng bayan and other members of the UP Diliman academic community for more than three decades – until the bells fell into disrepair in the late 1980s, and eventually became silent in 1988.
The alumni of two UP fraternities, the Tau Alpha and the Upsilon Sigma Phi, joined hands to help raise funds for the restoration of the Carillon, including the replacement of the bells and the landscaping of the Carillon Plaza.
It became a major project of at least three successive UPAA boards during whose terms several generous donors also participated. In December 2010, a concert was held at the Carillon Plaza, marking the turn-over of the newly refurbished Carillon to UP Diliman by UPAA.
