The UPAA launched the Carillon Concert Seasons with its maiden presentation – “Krizzmazz Jazz at the Carillon” – at six in the evening of December 10, 2015, at the Carillon Plaza in UP Diliman, Quezon City.
The concert, free for all members of the UP community and the general public, featured the UP Jazz Ensemble, also called UP Jazz Band, conducted by Prof. Rayben Maigue, with Dr. Ramon Acoymo, former dean of the UP College of Music, as concert artistic director.
The special guests were led by UP President Alfredo Pascual, who delivered a brief inspirational talk. UPAA President Ramon Maronilla thanked the university head for his support and UP Theater Director Josefina Estrella, administrator of the Carillon, for her assistance and cooperation.
The pieces interpreted by the group included popular Christmas carols, as well as I’ve Found a New Baby by Jack Palmer and Spencer Williams; One Note Samba by Antonio Carlos Jobim; Just the Way You Are by Billy Joel; Just the Two of Us by Ralph MacDonald, William Salter and Bill Withers; How High the Moon by Morgan Lewis. Dr. Acoymo narrated the “The Story of Jazz” by Alynn Heim, vibrantly punctuated with instrumental samples.
The concert numbers delighted the audience of about 300, some of whom sat in the lawn of the Carillon Plaza, while others swayed with the music. They clamored for an encore as the show ended, to which the conductor and his band graciously obliged with a final piece.
In closing, the audience and the performers sang UP Naming Mahal.
