The UP Alumni Association (UPAA) officially launched the search for the 2016 UPAA Distinguished Alumni Awardees on August 26, 2015, at the UPAA Board Room, Ang Bahay ng Alumni, UP Diliman, Quezon City. Nominations may be made by any UP alumnus or alumni chapter for any or all of the following five (5) categories:
- Most Distinguished Alumna/Alumnus Award
- Lifetime Distinguished Achievement Awards
- Distinguished Alumni Awards
- Distinguished Service Awards
- Multi-Generation U.P. Alumni Family Awards
The affair began with UPAA President Atty. Ramon M. Maronilla welcoming UP and UPAA officials, guests, and members of the media. He said that it was the first time that the UPAA was soliciting the special assistance of the media to search not only for well-known UP alumni achievers, but, more importantly, the unrecognized in the hinterlands and abroad.
For his message, UP President Dr. Alfredo E. Pascual, also a former UPAA President, enjoined the UPAA to seek out the unheralded UP alumni scattered throughout the islands and the globe, as well as foreign alumni who have made their marks in their homelands – because UP is global in character and its alumni achievers must be “trumpeted” to the world. He added that the UPAA Awardees need not be graduates, as long as they have accumulated at least 60 academic units while studying in the University.
The inspirational talk by GMA CEO Atty. Felipe L. Gozon, 2012 UPAA Distinguished Alumni Awardee for Lifetime Achievement, was read for him by GMA Asst. Vice-President for Corporate Affairs Ma. Teresa L. Pacis. Gozon shared that the curious combination of freedom of choice and commitment to high standards in UP equipped him with his leadership style – giving his subordinates enough leeway to maneuver, but holding them to the highest standards of performance. He said that receiving his award was a validation from the alma mater that he is doing well. He expressed pride that his whole family, who received the Multi-Generation UP Alumni Family Award in 2008, is made up of “iskolars ng bayan” stamped with “Tatak UP.”
