The College of Law is celebrating the centennial of its founding in 1911 with year-long activities beginning in January 2011. The theme of the celebrations is “The College of Law and the Challenges to Philippine Law at the Beginning of its Second Century.”
Highlights of the activities include, among others, the Grand Homecoming on November 11 at the PICC, the UP Law Centennial Lectures; ground breaking of the UP Law satellite campus in Taguig City; issuance of commemorative stamps by Philpost (see below), several book launchings and inauguration of the UP Law Centennial dormitory in January 2012.
Guest speaker at the Grand Homecoming was Vice President Jejomar Binay, a prominent alumnus of the college. In his speech, the vice president quoted Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr. who said “The business of a law school is…to teach law in the grand manner, and to make great lawyers.” These words of Justice Holmes are inscribed at the entrance of Malcolm Hall.
In the Centennial Lectures scheduled during the whole year, the following eminent lawyers and scholars comprised the list of speakers: Chief Justice Reynato Puno; Deans Raul C. Pangalangan, Salvador T. Carlota, Merlin M. Magallona, Froilan M. Bacungan and Pacifico A Agabin; Justice Florentino P. Feliciano; Prof. Owen J. Lynch; Chief Justice Hilario G. Davide; Justice Flerida Ruth P. Romero; Senator Edgardo J. Angara, and Atty. Estelito P. Mendoza. CJ Puno was also conferred the degree of Doctor of Laws, honoris causa.
President Benigno S. Aquino III declared 2011 as the “University of the Philippines College of Law Centennial Year.” A special stamp was issued by Philpost to commemorate the event.
UP COLLEGE OF LAW CENTENNIAL COMMEMORATIVE STAMPS
The Philippine Postal Corporation has come up with the University of the Philippines College of Law stamps which were issued last April 11, 2011, in line with its celebration of 100 years of excellence in law. It is classified as a “Commemorative” kind of issue with a denomination of P 7.00 and quantity of 113,000 pieces.
