The Floirendo family, well known for their agricultural holdings in Mindanao, donated a large tract of prime land in Panabo, Davao City, to the University of the Philippines for the establishment of a U.P. agricultural college in the area. The donation consists of two parcels: the first, comprising about nine hectares, is an outright gift; while the second, measuring more than ten hectares, is for usufruct over a period of fifty (50) years.
Worth P500-600 million at current realty prices, the gift represents one of the biggest donations received by U.P. under the administration of President Alfredo E. Pascual. The donation was formalized on November 20, 2014, between Mr. Ricardo Floirendo, family representative, and UP President Pascual, in the presence of former UPAA President Gari M. Tiongco and incumbent President and Alumni Regent Ponciano E. Rivera, Jr., who initiated and facilitated the donation, respectively.
To jumpstart the college, since January 2015 U.P. has been recruiting agriculture graduates who will enroll for master’s degrees when the school opens in August 2015.
