The UPAA, in cooperation with the UP Visayas Alumni Association, held the 40th Alumni Institute at the UP Visayas campus in Iloilo City last April 12-13, 2013. President Ponciano E. Rivera, Jr.; First Vice President Renato B. Valdecantos; and UPAA Executive Director Romeo S.A. Carlos led the UPAA delegation who went to the southern metropolis for the Institute.

Workshop on Values Formation

At 1:00 PM of April 12, UPAA Secretary Dodie D. Lagman, Jr., conducted a workshop entitled “Productivity through Values Formation,” sponsored by PR Bank and the UP College of Business Administration Alumni Association. Around 80 UP students, alumni and employees of the Iloilo City government participated.

Lecture-Forum on Political Dynasties

At 8:00 AM of the second day, April 13, a lecture-forum on the topic “Political Dynasties in Local Politics” began at the Auditorium of the UP Visayas. UPV Chancellor Rommel A. Espinosa welcomed all those who attended, while UPAA President Rivera delivered a short message.

The resource speakers were Prof. Prospero E. de Vera III, Vice President for Public Affairs of the UP System, and TV journalist Malou C. Mangahas of the Philippine Center for Investigative Journalism (PCIJ). Prof. de Vera pointed out that more than two-thirds of the House of Representatives were members of dynasties. Ms. Mangahas, for her part, expressed concern that the rising incidences of violence in provincial politics may be linked to the proliferation of dynasties.

Alumni Associations Presidents’ Meeting

At 1:00 PM, a meeting of Alumni Association Presidents was held at the UPV Cinematheque 1 Room. UPAA President and Alumni Regent Ponciano E. Rivera, Jr., presented the events lined up for the year-long UPAA Centennial celebration.

Iloilo City and UPV Miag-ao Campus Tour

The third day, April 14, 8:00 AM-4:00 PM, was devoted to a tour of Iloilo City and the UPV Miag-ao Campus, before the participants of the 40th UPAA Alumni Institute dispersed and headed for home.

80-Year-Old Regional Conference

The UPAA Alumni Institute is the brainchild of former UP President Jorge Bocobo, who launched it in 1935 as a means for the University’s interaction with its alumni and for the continuing education and professional development of the graduates. Since then, for almost 80 years now, except during the war years, the regional Alumni Institute has convened at least once a year to tackle key issues affecting UP and the country.

In recent years, the Institute has been held in Davao City; Tagbilaran, Bohol; Cabugao, Ilocos Sur; Tuguegarao, Cagayan; and even in neighboring Asean countries, such as Brunei, Djakarta, and Singapore. The Institute has served as a stimulus for the founding of more UPAA chapters in the provinces and abroad, as well as the reactivation of many dormant U.P. alumni associations.
